D-NAiL® 101: Basic Use
A D-NAiL® is a Name Brand enail. An 'enail' is an electronic nail system that usually consists of a control station, heater coil and a nail.
There will always be hundreds of different enails on the market, but there will only ever be one D-NAiL® brand of vaporizer control stations.
Your D-NAiL® heater coil (A.K.A. "whip") plugs into an electronic controller (or control station) to adjust the temperature of that attached coil. A coil itself will attach to a nail to provide the heated vaporization surface.
We refer to a 'nail' as the titanium/ceramic/quartz piece that is heated by the D-NAiL® coil.
My 3rd party enail box has a 5-pin XLR connection for coils, can I use a D-NAiL® coil on my generic enail box? -OR- Will a generic 5-pin XLR coil work on my D-NAiL®?
Knowing that the 3rd party enail box works with XLR connections is not enough to confirm compatibility with a D-NAiL® coil.
Each pin inside the 5-pin XLR cable is assigned to 1 of 5 different wires. These 5 pins can be configured 25 different ways.
Before you contact us to ask if you can plug a D-NAIL® coil into your 3rd party enail box — we respectfully request that you please confirm the 5-pin wiring of the control station you wish to plug the D-NAiL® coil into, as well as the Thermocouple Type.
Sometimes, you are able to find this information on the manufacturing schematics for the controller inside the box if you are able to Google Search the Model # found on the digital display of the enail box.

Connecting a D-NAIL® heater to an incompatible vaporizer can destroy or cause permanent damage to the vaporizer box, heater (or both) and/or may present a serious safety hazard.
If you have another brand vaporizer and would like to use one of our heaters, Contact Us before ordering. We do not know the pin configuration of every vaporizer on the market, but are familiar with several.
For full titanium nails - heat clean at 900°F for 1 – 2 hours if the cleaning is done infrequently — or for 30 minutes at the same temperature after each use. A titanium dish can be scraped gently while it is being cleaned if necessary.
To clean a full quartz nail - heat clean at 850°F for 1 hour.
D-NAiL® SiC HALO™ — Heat clean at 1000°F (increase temperature by 50 degrees starting at 850°F to prevent extreme heat changes). Depending on how much cleaning your D-NAiL® SiC HALO™ needs, it may take upto 2 hours for everything inside the dish to turn to white ash that can be cleaned out with isopropyl and a q-tip once the D-NAiL® SiC HALO™ dish has cooled down to room temperature.
D-NAiL® Quartz HALO™ — Heat clean at 900°F for 2 – 3 hours depending on how much cleaning the dish needs. Many customers have reported increased satisfaction when “q-tip tech” is used to maintain the dish between cleaning cycles.
D-NAiL® cannot support torch cleaning due to the wide variety of methods and types of torches available. Torch Clean At Your Own Risk.
To remove a D-NAiL® Sapphire Dish Insert from a full titanium nail after use — heat clean the nail at approximately 900°F for 1 hour — or as long as nail needs to clean before the Sapphire Insert loosens enough to come out.
A gentle heat clean cycle should allow you to carefully loosen the Sapphire Insert from inside the nail. Please remove the D-NAiL® Sapphire Dish Insert with care.
In order to clean a D-NAiL® Sapphire Insert that is paired with a D-NAiL® HALO™ dish, you can let the HALO™ dish cool completely and remove the insert from the HALO. Wipe clean with isopropyl and a cotton swab (Q-Tip®). Please make sure the D-NAiL® Sapphire Dish Insert is dry before use.
D-NAiL® coils are offered in sizes of 10mm, 16mm or 20mm and come as Standard Life, Extended Life or Encased varieties. D-NAiL® Flat Coil heaters are offered in Standard Life or Extended Life. There is no Encased Flat Coil.
Encased Heaters are best used in situations where you are having trouble keeping your nail hot due to extreme environmental conditions — for example, outdoor sessions during camping. When you are indoors and under normal conditions, the Encased Heater can help maintain temperature stability.
The heating element of the Encased Heater is located in solid metal, allowing for better thermal stability and heat retention than the Standard or Extended Life coil heaters. Since the heating element is not exposed to air, oxidation is greatly slowed, allowing for a long lifespan when run at standard temperatures. D-NAiL® Encased Heaters are heavier than Standard and Extended Life coils, so they may not be suitable for small or delicately balanced rigs.
We do not suggest using encased heaters on quartz nails, or at temperatures above 800°F / 425°C.
A few extra points for consideration —
- The extra flexibility that you have in a standard wrapped coil is lost with use of an Encased Heater.
- Heat Cleaning cycles are still best done with a standard wrapped coil, as an Encased Heater will begin wearing out at temperatures above 850°F.
- Extended Life heaters use a high grade nichrome alloy, allowing for routine use at higher temperatures and a longer running life with normal use. Heat cleaning cycles are not as harsh to an Extended Life heater's lifespan as compared to frequent heat cleaning cycles with a Standard Life coil.

My control station only supports one heating coil, but I'm with my buddy and we want to use two nails. When I "Hot Swap" the coils to heat up his nail, the control station starts malfunctioning. How can I run two nails off of one control station?
Unfortunately, you cannot "hot swap" the coil plugged into a D-NAiL® without risking some undesired results — especially if a second coil is plugged in without turning off the Coil Power switch. Your digital control station's "brain" is actively communicating with the coil plugged into it. Changing the coil that the "brain" is speaking with causes the control station some minor confusion. It requires a full session reset (Power Cycle) to correctly communicate with a different coil. ("Cold Swap.")
The best way to change the coil plugged into a D-NAiL® Digital Control Station is to do so when the first coil has been allowed to cool to room temperature before the Main Power is turned Off.
Then, while the digital display is blank — unplug the first coil, and plug in the second coil.
Please wait for the digital display to read Room Temperature before the Coil Power is turned On.
Please make sure that all switches on your Digital Control Station are turned on. If the heater switch and power switch are both turned on and the coil still does not heat up, then the coil itself may have burned out.
The Analog Controller will 'Click!' when the dial is turned to the 'On' position. If the coil still does not heat up then the coil itself may have burned out.
If you have a working coil that you can test with, make sure all switches are turned off before you plug in a different coil for testing.

My Digital Control Station's display is flashing! It shows:
- PFA (Model 1.X or Ninja Nail™)
- EEEE (Ninja Nail™ MINI)
- Random Numbers (ex 762) (Model 2.0)
This usually means that the control station does not recognize that a heater coil is plugged in. Try these steps —
- Turn off all switches, then unplug both the wall power and heater coil — wait 1 minute. Plug wall power and heater coil back into the control station. Turn Main Power back on.
- If the error persists after the above steps, turn the control station Main Power off and plug in a different heater coil that you know is working properly (if possible).
If the error persists with a working coil, or if you are unable to test your control station with a working coil then we will need to work with you to further diagnose if the fault is with your heater coil or the control station itself (less likely, but it does happen!).

My Digital Control Station rises to my set temperature, but every time I use my nail the temperature drops! What's going on?
Depending on environmental factors in the room around the nail (AC, fans, outdoors, etc), it is normal for a coil to fluctuate control station temperature by +/- 5°.
When you use a cold titanium cap with a hot nail, it is normal for the control station temperature to drop drastically while the cap is on the nail. You should see the nail rise back to your set temperature once you take the cap off.
Any other atypical fluctuations could be the result of a possible programming issue. Or, at worst, the heater coil is beginning to burn out. All models (except Model 2.0) have a Main Power switch (usually black) and a Heater Power switch (usually red or green). Make sure your control station is plugged into a wall power outlet, then turn on the Main Power switch.
The Model 2.0 has a Remote Control for its Main Power. When a Model 2.0 control station is plugged in with the optional power brick — it will only Power On with the Remote Control.
If these steps have not resolved your Main Power issue, then you may need to replace your power cord. You may Contact Us for a new power cord, or feel free to use a spare power cord – the same cord used for a PC monitor, computer tower or TV set can be used with your D-NAIL® control station.
Should a new power cord fail to resolve your issue, then please Contact Us with a description of the issue you are experiencing along with a Photo of your Serial# Sticker (usually found on the underside of the unit.)
The dish temperature of my nail is not matching the set temperature on the Digital Control Station, my IR gun tells me so. Is my Digital Control Station faulty?
First, make sure that a heater coil was not changed while the digital display was active and above room temperature. (See "hot swapping heaters")
Second, the dish temperature of your nail will always be lower than the set temperature on a digital control station. With as much accuracy as possible, we have made a handy Temperature Calculator for your use.
Normal IR guns will not give an accurate reading when pointed at D-NAiL® heater coils (or the Lotus heater), and may throw off the reading of your gun if used. D-NAiL® heater coils (and the Lotus heater!) are made with an element that is known for its "low emissivity." — (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Low_emissivity) — This means that unless an IR gun is specifically rated for "materials with low emissivity," then your gun will not be able to provide you with a reading more accurate than your control station.

We do our very best to QC and test all products before they leave our office, but manufacturing defects can happen. We offer a 90-Day Defect Warranty for UNUSED items sold on our website.
There is NO WARRANTY on ANY nail. However, in the unlikely event a nail arrives to you with a defect — or if you suspect that you received a defective item — Contact Us before you use it!
In the event that a D-NAiL® Heater Coil fails within the first 90-Days After Purchase, you may Contact Us to discuss the replacement of your coil.
For all cases — you will be required to show Proof of your Purchase Date AND Proof of the Defect.
If your quartz item arrived to you with any chips/cracks/fractures/size mismatch, please Contact Us ASAP before you use it! We can replace a 100% UNUSED quartz item if you contact us immediately to report a possible defect. Please refer to our Warranty Info page under the section "LOOSE HEATERS, NAILS, AND OTHER ACCESSORIES" for more information about how to Contact Us if you feel that you have received a defective item.
In the event that your quartz nail breaks after it has been used, and you did not contact us to claim a possible defect — then you will need to work directly with the manufacturer of your quartz nail for repair or replacement. There is no warranty for any USED item.

I made a purchase from d-nail.com but my account statement shows payment to Smart Smokes, LCC. Is this a scam?
Smart Smokes, LLC. was the name of the original parent company founded in 2009, and will soon be updating to D-NATiON. D-NAiL® was created in 2013 from the same team that continues to serve you today. Until further notice, purchases made from d-nail.com will appear on your financial statement as Smart Smokes LLC.
Most orders will be processed for shipping within 3 – 5 Business Days after payment is made, excluding Custom Orders. Pre-Orders will be shipped per the ETA found on the product pre-order page.
I just moved my place of residence, but have not updated my address with my bank yet. Can I ship an order to my new address?
Until further notice — your Shipping Address MUST match your Billing Address to process a credit card payment.
Due to an increasing number of fraudulent transactions and credit card charge-backs, we have had to tighten the security of all online credit card payments.

All packages will ship according to U.S. and International laws. Any Duty or Customs fees or taxes will be the responsibility of the customer. We apologize in advance.
We always hate to hear that a shipping carrier did not treat your package with the care and respect it deserves. Every order that leaves our office is sent in pristine condition.
If your package arrives damaged or suspect for any reason, REFUSE the package and RETURN TO SENDER. Please Contact Us immediately and let us know that you are returning a damaged package to us.
Opening a damaged or suspect package removes any claim options available to us with the shipping carrier and by doing so — you accept the package and its contents "as is."
As soon as possible, please Contact Us with a description of the issue you are experiencing and any photos you may have of a damaged package. We will most likely direct you to initiate a Damage Claim with the shipping carrier.
In the unlikely event that a package is deemed Lost In Transit by the shipping carrier, we will do our best to resolve the situation with you in a timely manner — however, some resolutions may take longer than others.
If your package tracking number was generated for the same shipping method that you paid for, then we cannot be responsible for any delays caused by USPS or other mail carriers once your order leaves our shop.
Should you believe your package delay is due to a perceived error by us, please Contact Us with a description of the issue you are experiencing and we would be happy to assist you.
If the included Packing Slip indicates that an item was placed on a Backorder status so that the rest of the order contents could ship ASAP, then we will send the Backordered item to you as soon as we can.

We do our best to keep our website up-to-date with our fluctuating inventory. In the unfortunate circumstance that we are unable to fill an order due to an availability concern, the entire order will be placed in a Backorder Status so that we may ship the missing item (or entire order) as soon as the missing item arrives to our office.

Sorry! This is not a service that we offer at this time. If your heater coil has burned out and you need a replacement, you may be eligible to receive a Free Warranty Replacement Coil. You can check if your control station is eligible for this warranty service here on our Warranty Info page.
